Medicine Drum Making Retreat - Tasmania
Time & Location
About the Event
Join us on a powerful journey to create your very own Medicine Drum!
In this full immersion weekend Workshop we will go on a journey to create a Shamanic Medicine drum and discover some of the many ways we can journey and heal with our drums.
We will come together on Friday night to join is sacred circle, here we will begin our journey as we honour the tree and animal spirit which have contributed to the creation of this sacred instrument. We will also share in a yummy dinner around the fire as we get to know eachother better.
On Saturday we will begin the process of joining the tree and animal in the sacred dance as we weave our blessings and intentions into our drums. We will explore totem energies that may present themselves for your drum and together in ceremony create a Sacred Instrument that will journey with you on your Earth Walk. We bring all the elements and energies together as we create our Sacred Instrument.
On Sunday we have the opportunity to awaken our drums through a traditional sacred ceremony, and discover the many ways in which we can work with our drums. We will discover how to journey to different worlds, discovering our power animals, use our drums as a sound healing tool and experience a nourishing sound healing session.
Tamaryn has been making drums for over 13 years, she has always been a drummer at heart and it wasn't long after she discovered her love of playing the drums, that she began making them. She has a true passion for medicine drums and working within the Shamanic realm. Growing up in an alternative family, she was exposed to this realm from a very young age and has journeyed there ever since. Tamaryn is also an artist and musician and loves bringing natural elements together to create works of art. She has studied Transpersonal Art therapy and Kinesiology and continues to learn and discover all the wisdom that Mama Earth has so offer. Tamaryn has always had a strong connection to the American Indian tribes, and is influence by much of their teachings and ceremonies. She has had the great honour of learning from those who were able to spend many years immersed in their culture.
About your Drum:
You will be making a 16" Willow drum, with your choice of Kangaroo or Deer hide. The hoop of your drum is a solid piece of Willow that has been steam bent. We use this type of hoop as plywood hoops can delaminate over time. There is also an option for a 16" oak hoop or oak ovoid hoop at an extra cost. Tamaryn uses a unique hand hold bead in the middle of the weaving on the back of the drum, which allows for a very comfortable and strong handle. There are endless options for the weaving on the back of the drum, Tamaryn will guide you through the process of choosing the best one for you.
Please visit our "Drum Totem Energies" page under "On Offer" for more info on the different energies.
If you do feel drawn to one of the oak hoops please see ticketing for different pricing options.

Making your own drum is not a quick process, in order to create a Sacred Instrument we are required as the drum maker to give of our energy and time just as the tree and animal have given of themselves. Saturday can be a big day of drum making. We have a maximum of 10 participants to ensure that everyone receives the support they need in creating their Medicine Drum. In some cases groups may be larger if a second facilitator is available.
We do ask participants to not leave during the retreat, as this can distrupt the energy of the circle. If for whtever reason you need to, please discuss with Tamaryn, prior to the event.
We do hold drum journeys as part of the workshop. If you have never journeyed before, don't worry we will guide you through it.
An important part of the process is the Awakening Ceremony. This is done to awaken and breath life into your drum, as well as offer the drum as a tool of awakening and healing. This ensures your drum is ready for the purpose for which is was created.
At the end of the workshop, you will leave with a beautiful drum and beater ready to embark on your journey together.
